MoCI Succeeds In Solving Egg Crisis

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has succeeded in solving the egg crisis by allowing the import of this product from several countries with the support of importers, reports Al-Rai daily. The country experienced the crisis when the Public Authority for Agricultural Affairs and Fish Resources (PAAAFR) decided to dispose 2.5 million egg-laying hens last month as they were found to be infected with bird flu. This deprived the local market of 7,500 cartons of eggs per day; while the average daily consumption is 2.7 million eggs.

According to the daily, the current price of eggs imported from Jordan and Turkey is KD 1.200 per tray as per the decision of the ministry. Azizi, a vendor, confirmed that the eggs imported from Jordan and Turkey are large and all imported eggs available in the local market are fresh. He affirmed the ministry is closely monitoring prices; while importers are covering the local market’s need for eggs, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

It has been reported as well that Kuwaiti eggs are available, but the supply is minimal – about 309 cartons daily from a local company, which was not affected by the disposal of a large number of hens as it is located in Shagaya – far from the Abdally and Wafra where the bird flu cases were discovered.
